I was awaken in the dark early hours of the morning of Thursday, January 30th to the loud cries of my cat, Fluffy. When I went to see what was wrong, he was clearly in severe pain with his lower abdomen swollen and hard, his heart rate irregular, and he was having difficulty moving.
I finally rushed him to St. Vital Veterinary Hospital where they said he had a sudden, severe bladder infection that needed to be flushed out immediately. His bladder, which should normally be no bigger than a walnut, was hard and the size of a grapefruit. If left too long, he would die.

Those of you who know Fluffy know him as the gentlest, cuddliest of creatures. He has turned cat haters into cat lovers. Dog people into cat people. He knows a good soul when he sees one and does all he can to greet them, shower them with affection, and do everything in his power to receive as much back as possible. His affection was further displayed while we were waiting for him to be anesthetized in the vet's office. He climbed onto my lap still very much in pain, in order to be closer.
I first got Fluffy in the summer of 2009. He was small, wide-eyed and loving. I was constantly watching him attempt to befriend all cats and humans alike. I connected with this Fluffsters more than I ever have with another animal. Over the last years we have gardened together, sunned and slept together, ate together, showered together, moved houses together, hunted down mice, ate cake, made friends, made and lost lovers, meditated, practiced yoga, watched movies, people watched, tried on underwear, and enjoyed each others company and affection.
Fluffy ended up staying the night at the animal hospital. The procedure went well, but also went longer than expected as they had to flush numerous crystal build up and blood clots from the lining of his bladder. It was such a relief to go pick him up and see him purring like his usual self even though he has been a bit slower due to his recovery process. The biggest hit in this whole situation, hasn't been the realization that one day Fluffy will pass on, or an awakening of how much I love him. I've always been aware of these, and experience each moment with him in the presence. The hardest hit despite the amazing care he was given at the animal hospital was his vet bill: $1100.00!
Rude awakenings do happen. And they offer lessons. I now know that pet insurance is something I should look into. But, being someone who has lived with an income way below the poverty line for years, this is tough shit.
So Fluffy and I are asking for help. We are asking for your help to reach our fundraising goal of 110 people to donate $10 each.
For every donation, no matter what the amount, we will thank you from the bottom of our hearts and send a card signed by Fluffy personally.
Any donation over $50 and you are invited to our home for a specially prepared meal (designed for any dietary needs).
For $100 and over, I would like to also offer you a private yoga class.
$50 over that and we can talk holistic nutrition and herbal medicine and design a personal health plan.
*Any extra funds will go towards the cost for Fluffy's special food and follow ups at the vet.*
